New Zealand attack: country in state of shock after 49 people killed in shooting in two mosques

NEW YORK (Reuters) 15march2019 - A New Zealand mourning case has killed 49 people in two attacks targeting worshipers in two synagogues in Christchurch.

Forty-eight people were wounded in the attack, and the identities of those killed and wounded were not disclosed.

Floral wreaths have been placed outside mosques across the country, while some people are waiting for news of their missing relatives in the attack.

Bangladesh, India and Indonesia say some of their citizens have been killed and others are still missing.

An armed man, who identified himself as an Australian citizen, broadcast footage of the attack on the Al-Nour Mosque on Facebook. Adopting anti-immigrant racist views.

Police say they arrested a man in his late 20s and was charged with murder.

Two other men and a woman were also arrested. One of them was later released.

The names of the attackers have yet to be announced. City police chief Mike Bush said they had seized firearms and explosive devices from a nearby location.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardran described the shooting as a well planned attack. "This was one of the darkest days in our country," she said.

"It is now clear to us that this could be described as a terrorist attack," she told a news conference.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the attack as a "far-right" terrorist. While the New Zealand police confirmed that the man was not known beforehand in both the New Zealand and Australian security.

The victim, a 28-year-old Australian citizen named Brenton Tarant, said he shot live footage of his attack on Facebook via a camera mounted on his head. The footage showed random shooting at men, women and children at close range inside the mosque.

Police called on the public not to publish and exchange "tragic" videos on the Internet. Facebook said it had removed the gunman's accounts on Facebook and Entgram and was working to remove any copies of the video footage.

The suspect, who was charged, appeared to have published a statement before the attack detailing his intentions, as well as details of the attack plan. His trial is scheduled for Saturday.
